Okonjo-Iweala backs Buhari on corruption war, says president leading by example

A former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s effort at tackling corruption, saying graft remains Nigeria’s biggest impediment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
Speaking on September 30 as a guest lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, United States, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said the president was confronting corruption “head on” and was setting the example that would directly help root out corruption in other sectors of the government.
“The new president of the country who is just taking office has made it the central plan of his administration to fight corruption to root it out, and he sets about restructuring some of the key agencies where things are happening, setting example,” the former minister said at the 2015 Holts Lecture of the Pennsylvania University Law School.
“I think with that when you see example in one place, it sends the message about what should happen in other places. I think this is being confronted head on. And I think and hope that with what is going on and what we tried to do in the previous administration, bringing more transparency to way of doing business.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said with “the example being set by the president” she was hopeful Nigeria will get rid of corruption.
The former minister discussed Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and how illicit financial flow could impede the post 2015 development agenda, especially in developing countries like Nigeria.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said although funds needed for SDGs are huge, blocking illicit financial flow could help free up the needed funds.
Eighty per cent of the SDGs are infrastructural goals which require $6 trillion in funding for the next 15 years, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said.
She said current global funding for infrastructures stood at $1.7 trillion, and 60 per cent of the SDGs and their funding are to be borne by developing countries – justifying why corruption must be confronted.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said as minister, she made efforts to improve transparency and fight corruption in the government, but regretted allegations of corruption directed at her after leaving office.
She also hinted that her decision to join the Goodluck Jonathan government — after serving in the Obasanjo government – may have been mistaken.
“When the opportunity came to go for it for the second time, I went, perhaps unwisely, but I went because no one will fight this corruption for us, we have to do it ourselves….,” she said. “But having left government, I have come under attack with people saying she’s done this or that, trying to join you in the group of the corrupt.”
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala commented on Mr. Buhari assigning the petroleum ministry to himself.
“I think the president has the prerogative to do a lot of things, and this is not the first time in our country. President Obasanjo was also the president of Petroleum Resources in his time. I am not saying this is the best way or best practice but I am just saying for our circumstances it is not the first time,” she said.
“If that will bring more clarity, more openness, more transparency to the way the oil sector is done no problem, it’s ok. But if it will not, we have to ask questions.”
She lamented the failure of the Nigerian National Assembly to pass the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, a failure she blamed on vested interests.
“This bill has the power to transform the entire petroleum industry where there is a lot of corruption,” she said. “And with that we would have commercialized the oil company (NNPC), made it open up its books but the heavy lobbying by both the domestic vested interests and the international vested interests blocked this.”

FG moves to check Fulani herdsmen, farmers clashes

DISTURBED by the renewed hostilities between suspected Fulani herdsmen and farmers in various communities across the country, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has appealed to both parties to sheath their swords and embrace peace to contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

The agency said the appeal has become necessary as the Federal Government is doing everything possible to resolve the lingering misunderstanding between the warring parties.

In a statement, NOA’s Director-General, Mike Omeri, reacting to what he described as extreme positions being suggested by various socio-cultural groups on the clashes between the herdsmen and farmers, said a Strategic Action Plan Committee (SAPC) set up by the Federal Government will bring lasting solution to the crisis, especially if both parties heed government’s advice.

According to Omeri, the committee has a holistic approach, which includes both short and long term strategies to end the lingering clashes. “With such a committee, it is only complementary that farmers, herdsmen and Nigerians, irrespective of origin or occupation, contribute to this peace production effort,” Omeri stated.

While sympathising with victims, Omeri assured Nigerians that the government is studying the recommendations of the various committees with a view to streamlining them to meet the realities of the time.

According to the statement, “Herdsmen and farmers need each other, and Nigeria needs them both. It is therefore a collective responsibility for all of us to advocate peace amongst the two sets of agriculturalists.”

The NOA boss, who specifically called on community leaders and heads of associations to appeal to farmers and herdsmen to embrace peace, recalled the contributions of farmers and herdsmen to the country’s economic growth, saying “such contribution is needed now, more than ever before, with the dwindling global oil price.

Gold digger is a derogatory name for a person who cultivates a personal relationship in order to attain money. The accusation of being a gold digger is usually aimed at a woman who is with a man only because she wants his money.

Now the above is the literal meaning of gold digger according to google,it is even a common case in our present day Nigeria that it sometimes feels okay or normal, because of the alpha male gene most men possess, they feel they should provide for the female folk, even though it is notright but the abnormal thing gradually becoming a trend now is the male gold digger

A male that makes it a point to be noticed via expensive material possessions Charismatic and charming, easily able to manipulate funds from empathetic souls.(women). Rarely works, have a sense of entitlement, lacks close peers and devoid of family. Steer clear of them. if its too good to be true it probably is.

Nigerian Churches, Others Causing Increased Witchcraft Persecution In UK – Group - Religion -

The significant rise in cases of witchcraft allegations and persecution in the UK has been attributed to the activities of African – especially Nigerian – churches in the country.

Gary Foxcroft, Executive Director of the Witchcraft and Human Rights Information Network, said in a statement Monday that the churches are growing at a phenomenal rate across the UK.

“Most of them are branches of large mega churches from Africa,” said Mr. Foxcroft.

“Some of these churches are known to promote the idea that children can be witches. Indeed the head of one of the biggest churches in Africa was captured on YouTube slapping a young woman and calling her a witch.

“There is currently no regulation in place to stop such people from entering the UK and establishing churches. This is clearly something that the government needs to address.”
Cases of witchcraft allegations and persecution have risen in the UK over the last two years, according to a BBC investigation.

The Metropolitan Police said there had been 60 crimes linked to belief in witchcraft and spirit possession in London so far this year, with reports doubling from 23 in 2013 to 46 in 2014.

More widely, in local councils across the UK, recorded cases rose from 10 in 2012, to 21 in 2013, and 31 in 2014, the police stated.
Experts, however, believe that the statistics represent the tip of the iceberg of a widespread phenomenon, with human rights campaigners calling for the UK government to do more to regulate faith groups, many of whom are believed to be behind such practices.

Mr. Foxcroft linked cases of witchcraft allegations and persecution to Christian and Muslim faith group where children, women, and the disabled are often labelled as witches or possessed by evil spirits, and then forced to undergo ‘deliverance’ or ‘exorcism’ ceremonies, often for a fee.
“There are a number of challenges to overcome to put a stop to this practice,” Mr. Foxcroft said.

“The first is at a national policy level. There is a complete lack of regulation of the people and practices that are behind these cases.
“The fact is that most cases primarily arise due to the practices of faith leaders, often in Pentecostal churches.”

‎Mr. Foxcroft said whilst the Home Office had been focusing strongly on preventing Islamic or far-right extremists from ‎entering the UK to spread their hate speech, more needs to be done to stop pastors who commit acts of terror on children.
“Preventing such people from entering‎ the UK therefore needs to be prioritized,” he said.

“Additionally, any places of worship found to be promoting such beliefs and practices in the UK should be shut down and have their assets seized.

“The Charity Commission in particular needs to show stronger leadership here. Finally, at the local level awareness and understanding is lacking amongst frontline staff.
“Most practitioners that we have trained express how they find the beliefs in witchcraft and subsequent methods used to deal with them, such as deliverances or exorcisms, deeply challenging issues to work on.”

Other human rights campaigners have also focused on the importance of challenging the beliefs that lead to children and other vulnerable groups being labelled as witches.

Leo Igwe, a human rights activist, said that any initiative to tackle the problem must include a program that educates and enlightens people to understand that children cannot be witches.

“The belief that they cause misfortune through witchcraft or magic is mistaken and must be abandoned,” said Mr. Igwe, who has worked to raise awareness of the issues facing vulnerable people accused of witchcraft in Africa and Europe.

“Religion or multiculturalism is not, and should not be, an excuse to condone harmful practices in Africa or in migrant communities in the UK.”
