Okonjo-Iweala backs Buhari on corruption war, says president leading by example

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
A former Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s effort at tackling corruption, saying graft remains Nigeria’s biggest impediment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
Speaking on September 30 as a guest lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, United States, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said the president was confronting corruption “head on” and was setting the example that would directly help root out corruption in other sectors of the government.
“The new president of the country who is just taking office has made it the central plan of his administration to fight corruption to root it out, and he sets about restructuring some of the key agencies where things are happening, setting example,” the former minister said at the 2015 Holts Lecture of the Pennsylvania University Law School.
“I think with that when you see example in one place, it sends the message about what should happen in other places. I think this is being confronted head on. And I think and hope that with what is going on and what we tried to do in the previous administration, bringing more transparency to way of doing business.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said with “the example being set by the president” she was hopeful Nigeria will get rid of corruption.
The former minister discussed Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, and how illicit financial flow could impede the post 2015 development agenda, especially in developing countries like Nigeria.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said although funds needed for SDGs are huge, blocking illicit financial flow could help free up the needed funds.
Eighty per cent of the SDGs are infrastructural goals which require $6 trillion in funding for the next 15 years, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said.
She said current global funding for infrastructures stood at $1.7 trillion, and 60 per cent of the SDGs and their funding are to be borne by developing countries – justifying why corruption must be confronted.
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said as minister, she made efforts to improve transparency and fight corruption in the government, but regretted allegations of corruption directed at her after leaving office.
She also hinted that her decision to join the Goodluck Jonathan government — after serving in the Obasanjo government – may have been mistaken.
“When the opportunity came to go for it for the second time, I went, perhaps unwisely, but I went because no one will fight this corruption for us, we have to do it ourselves….,” she said. “But having left government, I have come under attack with people saying she’s done this or that, trying to join you in the group of the corrupt.”
Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala commented on Mr. Buhari assigning the petroleum ministry to himself.
“I think the president has the prerogative to do a lot of things, and this is not the first time in our country. President Obasanjo was also the president of Petroleum Resources in his time. I am not saying this is the best way or best practice but I am just saying for our circumstances it is not the first time,” she said.
“If that will bring more clarity, more openness, more transparency to the way the oil sector is done no problem, it’s ok. But if it will not, we have to ask questions.”
She lamented the failure of the Nigerian National Assembly to pass the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, a failure she blamed on vested interests.
“This bill has the power to transform the entire petroleum industry where there is a lot of corruption,” she said. “And with that we would have commercialized the oil company (NNPC), made it open up its books but the heavy lobbying by both the domestic vested interests and the international vested interests blocked this.”

The villagers said they were on a peaceful protest against "forceful takeover" of their land by the Lagos state government on behalf of Africa’s richest industrialist, Aliko Dangote and the Lekki Free Zone Ltd when policemen attacked them reportedly killing two of the protesters instantly.

The villagers said the killing resulted in a crisis.

A local chief in the area told Saharareporters that the Lekki Free Zone Ltd called in anti-riot policemen of "Mopol 49" to kill the protesters because they had insisted too long ago against forceful acquisition of the community land by the Lekki Free Zone Ltd for the construction of a large petrochemical refinery owned by Mr. Dangote. The chief said the Mopol were led and supervised to the protest scene by Managing Director of the Lekki Free Zone Ltd, Mr. Disu.

But Mr. Disu was also among those downed as the police officers guarding him and protesters clashed, according to the local chief. One of the police officers was also feared dead. The community has been taken over by soldiers reinforced to the community as the crisis escalated.

The village is currently being raided by Nigerian troops sent to the community as a result of the crisis. Many villagers have vacated the village out of fear.

FG moves to check Fulani herdsmen, farmers clashes

DISTURBED by the renewed hostilities between suspected Fulani herdsmen and farmers in various communities across the country, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has appealed to both parties to sheath their swords and embrace peace to contribute to the nation’s economic growth.

The agency said the appeal has become necessary as the Federal Government is doing everything possible to resolve the lingering misunderstanding between the warring parties.

In a statement, NOA’s Director-General, Mike Omeri, reacting to what he described as extreme positions being suggested by various socio-cultural groups on the clashes between the herdsmen and farmers, said a Strategic Action Plan Committee (SAPC) set up by the Federal Government will bring lasting solution to the crisis, especially if both parties heed government’s advice.

According to Omeri, the committee has a holistic approach, which includes both short and long term strategies to end the lingering clashes. “With such a committee, it is only complementary that farmers, herdsmen and Nigerians, irrespective of origin or occupation, contribute to this peace production effort,” Omeri stated.

While sympathising with victims, Omeri assured Nigerians that the government is studying the recommendations of the various committees with a view to streamlining them to meet the realities of the time.

According to the statement, “Herdsmen and farmers need each other, and Nigeria needs them both. It is therefore a collective responsibility for all of us to advocate peace amongst the two sets of agriculturalists.”

The NOA boss, who specifically called on community leaders and heads of associations to appeal to farmers and herdsmen to embrace peace, recalled the contributions of farmers and herdsmen to the country’s economic growth, saying “such contribution is needed now, more than ever before, with the dwindling global oil price.

My Experience With A Male Gold Digger

Gold digger is a derogatory name for a person who cultivates a personal relationship in order to attain money. The accusation of being a gold digger is usually aimed at a woman who is with a man only because she wants his money.

Now the above is the literal meaning of gold digger according to google,it is even a common case in our present day Nigeria that it sometimes feels okay or normal, because of the alpha male gene most men possess, they feel they should provide for the female folk, even though it is notright but the abnormal thing gradually becoming a trend now is the male gold digger

A male that makes it a point to be noticed via expensive material possessions Charismatic and charming, easily able to manipulate funds from empathetic souls.(women). Rarely works, have a sense of entitlement, lacks close peers and devoid of family. Steer clear of them. if its too good to be true it probably is.

was in a relationship with a MALE GOLD DIGGER,i cook his food, pay for his upkeep even things as little as haircut,he gets monthly allowance from me too,guy always blackmailing me with breakup if i complain, well i later got my freedom though grin i ended the whole thing and guy still calling till date

So guys have you come across a male gold digger? How did you handle the situationship

Nigerian Churches, Others Causing Increased Witchcraft Persecution In UK – Group - Religion -

The significant rise in cases of witchcraft allegations and persecution in the UK has been attributed to the activities of African – especially Nigerian – churches in the country.

Gary Foxcroft, Executive Director of the Witchcraft and Human Rights Information Network, said in a statement Monday that the churches are growing at a phenomenal rate across the UK.

“Most of them are branches of large mega churches from Africa,” said Mr. Foxcroft.

“Some of these churches are known to promote the idea that children can be witches. Indeed the head of one of the biggest churches in Africa was captured on YouTube slapping a young woman and calling her a witch.

“There is currently no regulation in place to stop such people from entering the UK and establishing churches. This is clearly something that the government needs to address.”
Cases of witchcraft allegations and persecution have risen in the UK over the last two years, according to a BBC investigation.

The Metropolitan Police said there had been 60 crimes linked to belief in witchcraft and spirit possession in London so far this year, with reports doubling from 23 in 2013 to 46 in 2014.

More widely, in local councils across the UK, recorded cases rose from 10 in 2012, to 21 in 2013, and 31 in 2014, the police stated.
Experts, however, believe that the statistics represent the tip of the iceberg of a widespread phenomenon, with human rights campaigners calling for the UK government to do more to regulate faith groups, many of whom are believed to be behind such practices.

Mr. Foxcroft linked cases of witchcraft allegations and persecution to Christian and Muslim faith group where children, women, and the disabled are often labelled as witches or possessed by evil spirits, and then forced to undergo ‘deliverance’ or ‘exorcism’ ceremonies, often for a fee.
“There are a number of challenges to overcome to put a stop to this practice,” Mr. Foxcroft said.

“The first is at a national policy level. There is a complete lack of regulation of the people and practices that are behind these cases.
“The fact is that most cases primarily arise due to the practices of faith leaders, often in Pentecostal churches.”

‎Mr. Foxcroft said whilst the Home Office had been focusing strongly on preventing Islamic or far-right extremists from ‎entering the UK to spread their hate speech, more needs to be done to stop pastors who commit acts of terror on children.
“Preventing such people from entering‎ the UK therefore needs to be prioritized,” he said.

“Additionally, any places of worship found to be promoting such beliefs and practices in the UK should be shut down and have their assets seized.

“The Charity Commission in particular needs to show stronger leadership here. Finally, at the local level awareness and understanding is lacking amongst frontline staff.
“Most practitioners that we have trained express how they find the beliefs in witchcraft and subsequent methods used to deal with them, such as deliverances or exorcisms, deeply challenging issues to work on.”

Other human rights campaigners have also focused on the importance of challenging the beliefs that lead to children and other vulnerable groups being labelled as witches.

Leo Igwe, a human rights activist, said that any initiative to tackle the problem must include a program that educates and enlightens people to understand that children cannot be witches.

“The belief that they cause misfortune through witchcraft or magic is mistaken and must be abandoned,” said Mr. Igwe, who has worked to raise awareness of the issues facing vulnerable people accused of witchcraft in Africa and Europe.

“Religion or multiculturalism is not, and should not be, an excuse to condone harmful practices in Africa or in migrant communities in the UK.”

Abuja Natives Decry Omission From Ministerial List - Politics

Natives of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja have decried the non-inclusion of their representatives as ministerial nominees, saying despite President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise that he belongs to no one but everybody, natives of the FCT have been relegated in the list forwarded to the Senate.

A statement issued by the President, Original Inhabitants Development Association of Abuja (OIDA), Pastor Danladi Jeji, the inhabitants decried the continuous marginalization of FCT natives in key government positions within the Federal Government which doubles as their own state government as reflected in Section 299 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The natives are asking President Buhari to “appoint competent natives of Abuja as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and political aides so that the government will not have a crisis of confidence between it and Abuja original inhabitants.”

The pan-FCT group are also asking President Buhari to “relinquish his powers as Governor of FCT and the National Assembly to also relinquish its powers as the House of Assembly for the FCT to the original inhabitants and residents of the Territory so that they can freely elect those to govern them directly rather than the indirect rule presently obtainable in the FCT.”

OIDA also called for a “total audit of land allocations by the Abuja Geographic and Information System, AGIS to ascertain those behind massive fraud allocation of lands through programs like mass housing, Landswap and Centenary city projects.”

According to OIDA, As Nigerians await the remaining list from President Buhari, the FCT natives are hopeful that they will have a representative in the federal cabinet even as they pledged their continuous support to the new federal government.

‘Alamieyeseigha Was On Life Support Before Death

Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was on a life support before he finally died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Rivers State, on Saturday.

A family source, who spoke in confidence, said the hospital removed the life support after it could no longer sustain the former governor.

“He was on a life support but it was later discovered that the machine could no longer sustain him. I was there when it was removed. He was then certified dead,” he said.

He said the deceased’s family members decided to stay back at their Port Harcourt home following the circumstances that led to his death.

He, however, confirmed that the wife of the deceased and her children are expected to return to their home in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, later on Monday.

“They will be receiving guests and sympathisers at their Yenagoa home temporarily after which they will go to their community home in Amasomma, Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa,” he added.

Group Decries Buhari's Worrisome Display Of Misogynistic Tendencies

The Shadow Cabinet of Nigeria (SCN), an innovative style of opposition politics in Nigeria which is modeled after similar bodies in the UK and Australia has come out to condemn that lack of female representation in the 21-man list of ministerial nominees sent to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The SCN, which is made up of smart, patriotic and young democrats of the opposition spoke through a statement made available to The Trent and signed by Nkechi Ugwu, the Secretary of Women Affairs and Social Development of the SCN.

In the statement, the SCN called to mind that the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan gave women about 35% representation in his appointments, wondering why President Buhari has chosen not to tow the same path, as his 21-man ministerial nominees only had about 3 women.

The group also bemoaned the fact that the three women in the list are already facing stiff opposition from their various states.

The statement reads:

World over, the role of women in governance cannot be overstated. During the last administration, we saw increased participation of women in public administration, though not without the attendant controversies.

The giant strides they made and their collective landmark achievements would remain a point of reference for years to come. The Buhari led government seems poised on taking us back to the old era, and now, we are forced to ask; “Are Women really insignificant as far as governance is concerned in Nigeria”?

Since this female biased ministerial nominees list was released by the president Buhari government (the leaked list and their portfolios which poses a serious credibility question to this administration is a topic for another day), one would think that by looking up various fora, there would be articles and essays addressing the apparent neglect of women by the present administration, but we found to our utter dismay that this is not so.

The only visible article on this topic which was written by Bimbo Adelakun of Punch Newspaper has been taken down from their website.

This has really given us concern as a group as we are gradually realizing how insignificant the Nigerian government of this dispensation intends to make women. Globally, women are making as much input(s) socially, economically and politically as their male counterparts. It is therefore an injustice on the part of the Buhari led administration to knowingly seclude and relegate them to the background while making vital political and administrative appointments.

It is highly alarming that out of the twenty one (21) ministerial nominees as announced by the Nigerian Senate, only three women made the list and to worsen the situation, they are currently facing a backlash of sorts from their respective states.

It is on record that the previous administration gave the women a 35% political playing field which motivated and led to the active participation and empowerment of the women in a democratic setting. We expect this administration to consolidate on such precedent and not destroy it completely.

It is no longer news that women in several capacities have faced degradation socially and culturally but the protection of women rights and gender equality has secured a special place internationally through various statutes, acts and more explicitly in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Nigeria, being a signatory to this goal and most of the international laws that empower women should not pay lip service to such proclamations, but do everything within her power to uphold it through direct actions such as the appointment of women into various important positions in the federation as was the norm in the previous administration.

While not undermining the cultural and religious impediments this administration might be facing due to the region and religious faith of the president, it will be right to remind him that for a nation to grow, we all need to grow above our various itinerant affiliations and brace up to the realities of true democracy, federalism and development.

We hope that the Buhari led administration would henceforth show true equity and fairness as far as gender roles in governance is concerned.

We Won’t Allow PDP Senators To Disqualify Ministerial Nominees - APC Senators - Politics

We Won’t Allow PDP Senators To Disqualify Ministerial Nominees - APC Senators - Politics .
All Progressives Congress (APC) Senators have said they will not allow their colleagues from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) any chance to disqualify President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees when confirmation hearing opens tomorrow.
The Senate Thursday approved guidelines for confirmation of ministerial nominees which gave PDP senators enormous powers over who becomes a minister from their states.
There are three senators from each state and one of the guidelines requires a nominee to get the backing of at least two senators before he or she is confirmed by the Senate.

This puts Buhari’s nominees from the South-South and South-East at the mercy of opposition since his party has no senators from the eleven states in the two zones.
On Wednesday, Senator George Sekibo (PDP, Rivers East) tabled a petition seeking the rejection of the nomination of former of governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi.
However, in an exclusive interview with Daily Trust yesterday, Senate Leader Ali Ndume said they would resist any attempt by the PDP Senators to disqualify any nominee.
“We won’t allow the PDP senators to disqualify the ministerial nominees because they are qualified and suitable for the federal cabinet in line with the Constitution of the country.
“Even though we will allow the PDP Senators to do their job, we will not allow them to use any selfish interest to push down the ministerial nominees.
“The interest of the country should be the utmost interest of all of us now,” he said in a phone interview.

Reacting to the report that the nominees are lobbying the PDP Senators, Ndume said there was nothing bad in that.
He said: “It is normal and this has been the tradition everywhere including in the United States.
“In fact, let me tell you, as the Majority leader and chief marketer of the nominees, I have been lobbying my colleagues.
“I have reached out to two Senators from Rivers state who were my colleagues at the House of Reps. I have spoken to Senator George Sekibo and Senator Olaka Johnson Nwogu for them to support Amaechi.
“We will not let our ministerial nominees suffer unnecessarily but in doing this we will follow due process.
“As we have said the screening will be different this time around because we will follow the Constitutional provisions”.
But he added: “Let me tell you, the issue of getting two Senators is not sacrosanct”.
Meanwhile, our correspondent reports that the ministerial nominees are making last minutes move to meet the conditions set by the Senate for the screening.
It was reliably gathered that the nominees have declared their assets at the Code of Conduct Bureau and are now lobbying Senators from their respective states.

"Why I Am Not Worried About My Wife Cheating On Me"

A married woman was caught in the act here on Friday. It happened right in her husbands house so neighbours were there to witness what happened. I was there too to witness the taboo cause her husband was just shouting that whoever was around should come and witness a taboo.

Sha, that is not why I am writing this post.

What actually necessitated this post was a convo I had with a man on my way back.

Man: It is stuffs like this that makes me appreciate where I come from.

Me: Huh

Man: I appreciate my village the more anytime I hear or witness something like this because married women don't cheat on their husband in my place.

Me: How is that possible?

Man: They Know what would happen to them if they dare cheat on their husband.
www.cedricme.com
Me: What will happen to them.

Man: If a married woman sleeps with another man, or collects money from another man, or spends her husband's money on another man without telling her husband, she will run mad.

Me: And if a man sleeps with another woman?

Man: Nothing, except the woman has a husband.

What he's saying in essence is that a married woman who sleeps with a man that is not her husband or collects money from a man who is not her relation or spends money on another man without informing her husband will lose her sanity. The madness is curable but she must confess her sins to regain her sanity.

So Nairalanders, what do you think of this people's tradition?

BTW, the man is from one village at obollo

Kachikwu Sanctions NNPC Staff Over Scandalous Project Exposed By PREMIUM TIMES

Few days after PREMIUM TIMES exposed how crooked officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, stole billions of naira using an enterprise resource solution meant for accountability, the head of the corporation on Thursday wielded the big stick, suspending the official at the centre of the scandal indefinitely. Authoritative sources said the recently appointed Group General Manager, SAP/IT Department, Surajdeen Afolabi, whose unit is in charge of the controversial SAP project, was asked to immediately proceed on indefinite suspension. Mr. Afolabi had been in charge of the project since 2007 when it was originally conceived as a plank of the then Olusegun Obasanjo administration’s reform agenda in the oil and gas industry. The suspension order issued by the Group Managing Director, Ibe Kachikwu, is to allow for unfettered review and investigation into the project implementation, PREMIUM TIMES understands. The recently recruited head of the seven-member SAP Team, Inuwa Danladi, appointed General Manager, ITD/SAP of NNPC, was directed to take charge till further notice. Late President Musa Yar’adua had on February 16, 2009, approved $36.75 million for the completion of the entire project meant to monitor real-time NNPC operations and its network of subsidiaries and affiliates irrespective of their locations. Successive NNPC managements exploited the loopholes in the project, and fleeced the corporation of billions. A February 2015 implementation review report by the Corporate Audit Department of the NNPC titled: “Review of SAP Implementation Project,” exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, revealed how the deployment of the SAP solution turned a specimen of monumental fraud. By January 2015, the report said the SAP ERP implementation gulped almost double the total amount approved for the deployment of the solution in all NNPC’s 18 subsidiaries, affiliates and strategic business units. The report said the implementation of the project, which had 86 weeks completion time-line, had dragged for more than three years, despite gulping over $70 million – almost double the original contract sum – with nothing to show. “There seems to be a disconnect between the business units (users of different SAP solutions) and the SAP PMO as per the completeness of deployment and usability of the solution,” the report stated. “While SAP PMO considers SAP program as having been completed and closed, most business units are still grappling with challenges, ranging from incomplete deployment, lack of integration amongst modules and usability,” it added. IT experts familiar with the workings of the SAP system globally said it is usually deployed once, and run globally through an integrated network linking all SBUs, irrespective of location, the managers of the system in NNPC were hawking them piecemeal to all subsidiaries for personal gains. The review report had said that, so far only five of NNPC’s subsidiaries have the system functional, and without integration with the other subsidiaries and affiliates. On assumption of office, the NNPC GMD, had on several occasions, expressed outrage, frustration and disappointment over the implementation of the project. During a meeting with NNPC’s top management officials late September, the GMD reportedly observed that despite the huge investment in the SAP project, it remained more of a drainpipe than a solution to anti-corruption campaign in the organisation. A spokesperson for the NNPC, Ohi Alegbe, could not be immediately reached for comments for this story. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/191306-nnpc-boss-kachikwu-sanctions-staff-over-scandalous-project-exposed-by-premium-times.html

Jobs/vacancies Section Chatroom

I am sure quite a number of you JobLanders will agree with me that it’s about time we had a chat room in this section. The most important reason being the constant derailing of serious threads which may span into pages.

Hence forth, IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE: All trivial gists, gossips, discussions, chat-ups, e-toasting etcetera should be done on this thread. Any defaulter to the normal Nairaland rules shall be... well, fill in the Gap. Also, if you have any questions for the Mods, if you want to abuse me / us, please feel free to do it here.

Post whatever you ever wanted or needed to say to your favourite JobLander (whatever that means) outside actual serious Job threads.

You can even hook-up, plan a meeting or a coup, just about anything.

Anyways, enjoy! wink
